Day 07 of 30 · Compiler foundations

Consolidate the compiler foundations

Checkpoint A
Time
About 150 minutes: 30 reading, 90 lab, 20 testing, 10 notes.
Prerequisites
Day 06: Check meaning before generating code

Toolchain: LLVM 17 and current main

Today touches both toolchains. Keep separate build directories and explicit executable paths: LLVM 17 for book exercises, build/bin/clang++ from current main for Clang work. Setup guide

Learn

  • Review and catch-up checkpoint with no new language features.

Read Reading

Reading budgets cover selected sections, not whole chapters. Link to the book; this site does not reproduce it.

Build Build or investigate

  1. Run the test suite from a clean build.
  2. Explain the path from input text to evaluated result without looking at the implementation.
  3. Finish the Clang build if needed; otherwise record the first build blocker and a specific recovery step.

Done when

Checkpoint A: a tested expression frontend and a one-page explanation. If parsing or name resolution is unclear, repeat days 4–6 before continuing.

Recall question

Where should each of your three error examples be detected?
